Mission: To take care of the elderly with love and compassion so that they can live the end of their years with dignity.

Number Served: 35 live-in senior citizens.

Director: Father Mario Heredia

Location: Colonia La Joya, Tijuana, BC, Mexico

SHI Partnership Began: 2008

Project Overview: Casa Hogar del Anciano Juan Pablo II is affiliated with the Catholic Church and is a rest home for senior citizens who have been abandoned by their families and are unable to care for themselves.  The rest home provides social services in the form of food, clothing, medical, spiritual, and social activities in a clean environment. Residents are fed three times a day and receive blankets, shoes, clothing and hygiene items provided at Christmas time by Serving Hands International. The facility currently provides services to 30 senior citizens, but it is anticipated that accommodations will be increased to help house up to 100 senior citizens.

Current Needs: To provide food, clothing, blankets, and medication necessary in order to cover the basic human necessities.

Casa del Migrante en Tijuana, A.C.

Casa del Migrante en Tijuana, A.C.
(Home for the Migrants)

Mission: To provide assistance to men who have been deported back to Mexico from the United States.

Number Served: 8,500 per year.

Location: Mesa de Otay, Tijuana, BC, Mexico

SHI Partnership Began: 1999

Project Overview: Casa del Migrante en Tijuana, A.C. was founded in 1987, and is a faith-based non-profit temporary shelter run by the Scalabrinian Priests.  The facility provides assistance to men who have been deported back to Mexico from the United States. Oftentimes these men return Tijuana with no money and no way to get back to their home. They receive 3 meals a day, a shower, clean clothing, and are allowed to stay at the center for up to 12 days.  The center also provides medical care, counseling, resources for job training and placement, and spiritual guidance.   SHI provides food, blanket, sweatshirts, shoes, and tarps to the Casa. Current Needs: Rice, beans, potatoes, meat and vegetables to continue providing essential meals for migrants.

Casa de los Pobres, A.C. & (Ciudad de Misericordia)

Project Overview: Casa de los Pobres is affiliated with the Franciscan Order and has been an SHI partner for over 30 years.  Casa de los Pobres provides 2 daily meals to over 27,000 persons on a monthly basis, they distribute over 20,000 meals to familes, provide job training, and basic medication to persons who cannot afford to purchase medication. Casa de los Pobres also provides spiritual guidance by celebrating weekly mass and providing catechism classes to the youth. Formal education, educational psychology, physical therapy (swimming), workshop of computation, and food balanced and nutritious with an extended hours giving mothers and these families be able to fulfill its commitment and labor that it may be possible to meet most basic needs..

Parish San Fernando

SHI Partnership Began: 2009

Project Overview: To date, SHI has donated two portable classrooms which will help the Capilla continue to serve the community with Holy Mass every Sunday and religious education.  The Capilla de San Fernando helps the poor by providing food and meals every Sunday after mass.  It also provides baptism services, and catechism for children to help prepare them for the First Communion and Confirmation.

CANOA

CANOA
(Center for Care of Children with Other Capabilities)

Mission: Providing physical, language, speech, nutrition, and communication therapy.

Number Served: Children ranging from 3 to 23 years of age.

Director: Father Jaime Hagan

Location: Fracc. Tecolote, San Antonio de los Buenos, Tijuana, BC, Mexico

SHI Partnership Began: 2007

Project Overview: C.A.N.O.A. is a project initiated in 2004 by Father James Hagan and the local community, and stands for Centro de Atencion a Niños de Otros Aptitudes. The Center was created because Father Hagan new that “healthcare for the poor in Mexico is often unobtainable” and C.A.N.O.A. would fill that void by providing medical assistance, counseling, recreational and education service programs for severely handicapped children and youth.
With the help of SHI, and other NGO’s, C.A.N.O.A. has constructed an assembly hall and a diagnostic and therapy center in the southern hills of Tijuana for special needs children afflicted with cerebral palsy, mental retardation and other disabling conditions. Services provided emphasize on physical, psychological, communication, nutritional and occupational therapies. Both children and parents learn basic skills that help them develop their potential and lead to their optimum levels of independence. The center is staffed by volunteers and experienced, and dedicated, professionals in the fields of medicine, physical therapy and psychology. Center volunteer groups serving the needy in Mexico include Centro Juvenil, De Colores Foundation and MANO.

Of Note: According to a recent article in Baja Times, an English newspaper of Baja California news and events, the facility is still struggling financially but will continue to welcome children in need as well as volunteers. “Padre Jaime invites anyone to…volunteer their time. People who come here get to interact with our wonderful people and our children. We never throw in the towel for any of our children. It is an encouraging and uplifting experience.”

Current Needs: The center opens each day “from prayers and goodness of people.” Although money is always a concern, electricity is their main necessity right now.  Volunteers are also always welcomed, and needed, to keep the program afloat. Right now the program is in need of a volunteer bus driver as well as others to help work with the clients.
