Help One Person at a Time – Serving Hands 2015

By | Blog

“Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest to you,” this was Mother’s Teresa’s calling to serve the poor. We rejoice in sharing that joyful mission! Serving Hands International hosted their annual luncheon celebrating 33 years in service on October 1, 2015 in San Ysidro, California. The event featured 170 current Serving Hands partners, ministry leaders and program directors joining in the celebration! Among attendees were 37 sisters, 31 priests and Tijuana’s own Bishop Rafael Romo Munoz. Together with Serving Hands Founders, Board members and staff, we celebrated another great year of Serving Hands International’s commitment to service.  The Caster family, Serving Hands International Board, Staff and volunteers want to thank you, Serving Hands International Partners for carrying on the legacy. This is made possible due to the generosity of A-1 Self Storage and its valuable customers. With this support Serving Hands International is able to provide supportive programs within the countries of Mexico, India, Ghana, Tanzania, Peru, Philippines and South Africa to help those communities and their people. We follow Mother Teresa’s lead as we strive to serve the poorest of the poor and positively impact the lives of those both near and far.

Thank you for your support! – SHI

No Arms, No Limits: An Orphan’s Letter of Gratitude

By | Blog

To Serving Hands International,

My name is Alexander Joseph. I am seven years old. I was born with no arms. I live in Moshi. My parents died of Aids. My father was the first to die and my mother died when I was one year old. I came to live with Father Urio then. I have just received a scholarship for my schooling from you (Serving Hands International).

I would like to say thank you so much for saving my life because education is life in Tanzania. My dream is to attend college. With your (Serving Hands International) support I am blessed to go to school. I have a home with meals, I play with other children and I have clothes to wear. None of this would be possible without your support. Thank you.”

Serving Hands International Field Officer, Joaquin Hernandez called Father Urio of the Catholic Diocese of Moshi, Tanzania to discuss Alexander’s letter. While speaking with Father Urio and gaining his permission to share Alexander’s letter with you, he was taken with the warmth of how Father described this child. With permission we share his thoughts with you.

“Alexander Joseph was very young when we brought him into our home.  Alexander has been a good child, an inspiration to us all, because he does not allow his disability to stop him. He is determined. Alexander uses his legs and toes to write. He has very good handwriting and is a stellar pupil. Alexander placed second in his class of 39 children.  I know he will go far in this world. I pray that his dream to attend college becomes reality.”

Serving Hands International began partnership with Father Urio in Moshi Tanzania in 2005.  Alexander Joseph is one of the many children we have been able to serve through this successful partnership.  Together we have helped educate over 150 orphan children, provided meals, clothes and a home to 200 children! We have also partnered in 4 micro credit projects with the Father.  We are honored to serve alongside of Father Urio and the Diocese of Moshi, Tanzania, Africa.  The impact this program has made in such a short time is tremendous. Such an impact has been made possible by our sponsor A-1 Self Storage and donors like you. Thank you!

From The Ashes to Hope

By | Blog

House fires are not uncommon, especially in impoverished areas of the world. You read about them in the newspaper or hear about them during your evening news broadcast. It’s noteworthy, and as a viewer one likely sympathizes.

Yet many won’t give it a second thought.  In April of 2014 in the outskirts of Tijuana, Mexico the Lozano family of 9 lost everything in a house fire. There was nothing they could salvage. The miracle; however, was that not one family member or neighbor was hurt.  Grateful to have each other, they grieved their loss and then wondered what they would do. Where they would go? Serving Hands International in partnership with Centro Promocion Esperanza decided to exercise an arm of their mission and assist in building a new home for them. When Mrs. Karla Lozano was told of the new home she expressed such joy and gratitude. She is quoted saying, “Take care of your family. Love your family. Cherish your family. Because the material things can be replaced, I couldn’t believe there are people in the world that cared about others in this way. Gracias.”  Our partner representative, Sister Ines stated, “The overwhelming response to meet the needs of this family in such a short time is tremendous!” Thanks to the generosity of A-1 Self Storage and donors like you our mission to provide shelter to the Lozano family was a success!
